COLUMBIA COUNTY COMMUNITY NETWORK – KIWANIS ROAD TO LEADERSHIP PROJECT
Each year the Kiwanis Club Road to Leadership project sends four or more local high school
juniors and their teacher on an all-expense paid educational trip to Washington D.C. for a
week of intensive learning activities. As part of the Close Up program, they join with
hundreds of other young people from across the country to explore DC, meet with their
Representatives and Senators, and visit historic monuments and museums. This is a one-ofa-
kind opportunity for students to experience their government in action.
Our students also get face to face with Washington insiders that play a key role in the
American political system. Our seminar panels often include lobbyists, journalists, and
members of the Armed Forces. These instrumental political players take time to answer
questions from students and explain more about how they impact government and policy.
Students who apply for the program prepare for the trip with their teachers. Upon their
return, these future leaders share what they have learned with other classmates and our
